South All-State Junior Baseball Team Finishes 3-1

The South All-State eighth-grade baseball team, coached by Rod Wiethop, finished 3-1 at the All-State Games in Jacksonville.

Members of the team were Carson Fox, Westin Hayes, Jenner Pals, Hank Nelson and Ian Kinkelaar from Effingham Junior High, Owen Schuette, Nash Wernsing and Freddy Jansen from Effingham Sacred Heart, Colby Redman, Colby Snyder and Keegan Puckett from Olney and Xander Wilson from Oakwood.

In the opener, the South squad lost it's only game, 4-2 to Southwest All-State. South took a 1-0 opening inning lead but Southwest tied then moved ahead with a run in the fourth and two in the sixth.

Fox had a single, a home run and an RBI for the South squad.

The South then came back to claim three straight wins.

The squad defeated North Central, 12-1 in five innings.

Wilson picked up the pitching win, allowing four hits, one earned run while striking out nine.

Snyder had two singles, a double and three RBI while Nelson had a triple, Hayes two singles and Wernsing a single and two RBI.

In the third contest, South edged East 9-8.

East held a 3-0 first inning lead and led 7-5 after five innings. South then scored four runs in the sixth to pull out the victory.

Pickett had a home run and three RBI while Redman and Kinkelaar had a solo shot each. Nelson added a triple and two RBI.

In the final game, South edged Northeast, 6-5. The two squads were tied at 5-5 after five innings before South won it in the sixth with a run.

Wilson had a single, two doubles and an RBI while Fox had a single, triple and two RBI. Schuette added a double and Pals a single and an RBI.

The South Most Valuable Player was Xander Wilson of Oakwood who went five-for-nine at the plate with seven stolen bases, scored seven runs and went 1-0 on the mound.

"The kid played great," said Coach Wiethop.
