The St. Louis Cardinals did some wheeling and dealing Tuesday.

St. Louis dealt right-handed pitcher Jack Flaherty to the Baltimore Orioles for infielder Cesar Prieto, left-handed pitcher Drew Rom and right-handed pitcher Zack Showalter.

The Orioles got the 27-year-old Flaherty right before the Trade Deadline ended. Flaherty threw 109 2/3 innings for the Cardinals, allowing 54 walks while striking out 106. He had an ERA of 4.43.

The Cardinals got two prospects who were ranked. Prieto was No. 16 and Rom No. 18 in the Orioles systems.

St. Louis has been struggling this season and has a 47-61 record at this point and are 11 1/2 games back of first place. St. Louis was the most active seller at deadline.

Prieto has an .868 OPS in Double A and Triple A. Rom had a 5.34 ERA and 100 strikeouts in 86 innings in Triple A.

The Chicago Cubs dealt right-handed pitchers Adrian Sampson and Manuel Rodriguez toTampa Bay for right-handed pitcher Josh Roberson.

Roberson was a 12th-round draft pick by the Marlins in 2017. He had a 4.50 ERA in 36 innings in relief in Triple A Durham.

Padres Address Most Glaring Needs

The San Diego Padres pulled off a trade that addressed two of their most glaring needs on Tuesday morning, acquiring left-handed-hitting first baseman Ji Man Choi and longtime starting pitcher Rich Hill from the Pittsburgh Pirates, the teams announced.

The Pirates receive first baseman Alfonso Rivas and a pair of minor leaguers, Double-A left-hander Jackson Wolf  and 17-year-old outfielder Estuar Suero. Wolf was ranked 16th in the Padres system by MLB.com.

Rodriguez Blocks Trade

Detroit starter Eduardo Rodriguez invoked his no-trade clause to block a trade that was in place between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Tigers, killing the deal ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline.

Rodriguez, a left-hander, had a 10-team no-trade clause that included the Dodgers.

Astros, Verlander Reuniting

The Houston Astros and Justin Verlander are reuniting in hopes of securing a third championship together.

The Astros reached an agreement with the New York Mets on Tuesday to reacquire Verlander, bringing the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner back to Houston.

Outfielder Drew Gilber, rated as the Astros’ best prospect by MLB.com, is heading to New York in the deal, as is minor league outfielder Ryan Clifford.
