Altamont Defeats Newton; Hearts Lose Close One

ALTAMONT 7, NEWTON 6

The Indians and Eagles fit in one more game before they begin postseason play. Newton scored in the top of the first, but Altamont scored three times in the bottom of the frame, then added a run in third to lead 4-1. Newton, though, tied the game with three runs in the top of the sixth. Altamont came right back, scoring three in the bottom of the inning to pull back ahead 7-4. Newton wasn't done, scoring twice in the top of the seventh, but Altamont held on for a one-run win.

Both teams pitched a bullpen game, getting their staffs ready for regional play. For Altamont, Mason Robinson pitched 1-1/3 innings, allowing a run on one hit and two walks while striking out four. Nathan Stuemke pitched 1-2/3 clean innings with a strikeout. Kaden Davis went two innings, giving up a hit and fanning five. Carter Siebert pitched an inning, allowing three runs, two earned, on two hits. Aiden Jahraus pitched the final inning, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out two. For Newton, Gary Lewis pitched an inning, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk. Gus Bierman pitched two innings, allowing a run on two hits and a walk while fanning three. Jacob McClure pitched two perfect innings with four strikeouts. Seth Ochs pitched the final inning, allowing three runs, one earned, on two hits and two walks with one strikeout.

HIGHLAND 2, EFFINGHAM 1

A tough loss for the Hearts. Highland took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but Effingham tied the game in the sixth. Highland scored in the bottom of the seventh to win it.

Kaden Koeberlein went the distance for the Hearts, giving up the two runs on five hits with no walks against four strikeouts.
