ST. LOUIS -- It was quite the night for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Taking on Pittsburgh in a doubleheader, the Cardinals had some big games from Paul Goldschmidt and Miles Mikolas and swept the doubleheader by 3-1 and 9-1 counts.

In the opener, the Cardinals took the 3-1 victory. Goldschmidt had two hits, a single and a two-run homer. He finished with three RBI while five other Cardinals had a hit each.

Them came the momentous second contest. Goldeschmidt continued his hot hitting with two more home runs. He went four-for-four on the day with his two home runs and five RBI.

Also going deep in the second game were Tommy Edman and Brendan Donovan.

But the big news was the no-hit pitching bid of Mikolas.

The righty went through eight innings without allowing a hit. Pittsburgh scored a run in the fourth inning on a an error that allowed the runner to reach second. He went to third on a ground out and came home on the second ground out.

Mikolas went through the first eight innings without allowing a hit and just needed one more strike for the third out in the ninth.

But Cal Mitchell hit a shot that went over the head of Harrison Bader and bounced over the wall in centerfield for a ground-rule double.

Packy Naughton came on the mound to get the final out for the Cardinals.

Mikolas finished allowing one hit, one walk while striking out six.

The Cardinals stand in first place in the National League Central with a 37-27 record. Milwaukee is 2.5 games back in second place while the Chicago Cubs are fourth, 12.5 games back.

At Chicago

The San Diego Padres didn't wake up until the sixth inning and that's when the Chicago Cubs went to sleep.

The Cubs did all their scoring in the first five innings, taking a 1-0 first inning lead then tacking on two in the third and single runs in the fourth and the fifth to lead 5-0.

But the Padres got their bats unlimbered and went on a four-run tear in the sixth and added six runs in the seventh. They scored single runs in the eighth and ninth.
San Diego banged out 15 hits against six Cubs pitchers.
