Cubs Bang Out 12 Hits, Down Cardinals, 7-5

CHICAGO -- Behind a 12-hit attack, the Chicago Cubs handed St. Louis a 7-5 defeat at Wrigley Field Thursday.

The Cubs opened with a 2-0 first inning lead. Christopher Morel nailed a double to left field and scored when Willson Contreras knocked out a home run.

St. Louis knotted the score in the top of the third. Paul Goldschmidt ripped out a double in the inning, extending his streak, and knocked in the Cardinals' first run. Nolan Arenado singled to bring Goldschmidt home to tie the score.

But the Cubs tallied single runs over the next three innings to lead 5-2. St. Louis scored a run in the sixth but the Cubs scored again with two in the eighth. St. Louis mustered two more runs in the ninth on a Harrison Bader home run.

The Cubs offense included three home runs by Contreras, Frank Schwindel, who went three-for-four including the home run, a single and double. He finished with two RBI. Ian Happ had a single and a solo shot.

Christopher Morel added a double and an RBI while P.J. HIggins had two singles.

Keegan Thompson went 5.1 innings allowing five hits, three walks while striking out three.
