Effingham High School struck early with a five-run first and held off Dieterich in a 9-6 baseball victory Thursday in a game heard on KJ Country 102.3.

John Harper was bad news for Dieterich pitchers, driving in five runs on a single and double. The Hearts finished with only four hits, with two of those coming from Harper.

In the opening inning, Quest Hull led off by drawing a walk. Gauge Masssey followed with a double. An error then scored two runs. Camden Raddatz followed with a walk and Max Hardiek was hit by a pitch. Evan Waymoth drove in a run with a single.

The Hearts came back with another run in the second inning on two errors and an RBI single by Harper.

Dieterich tallied three runs in the fourth inning as Jaxon Funneman and Kolton Kidd drew back-to-back walks. Sam Hardiek singled. A fly ball by Lucas Westendorf scored a run.

The Hearts retaliated with three in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, David Splechter drew a walk followed by walks to Hull and Massey. Harper then came up with a single, scoring two runs.

The Movin' Maroons came back with three in the top of the seventh as Pete Britton reached on a single and Austin Ruholl was hit by a pitch. An error allowed Braden Shadel on base. Another hit batsman, an error and an RBI ground out by Hardiek produced the three runs. The Hearts got out of the frame on a double play.

Raddatz picked up the win going three innings, allowing two runs but no hits. He gave up seven walks and had five strikeouts.
