Major League Baseball said Thursday that it will be experimenting with several rules changes in the minor leagues this season.

They will include an automated strike zone, restrictions on defensive positioning, larger bases, restrictions in pitchers’ ability to hold baserunners, and on-field timers.

The league said the goal is to “increase action on the basepaths, create more balls in play, improve the pace and length of games, and reduce player injuries.”
