Shoes Break Open Close Game in Win Over Hearts

It was 1-0 Teutopolis in the fourth inning of Monday evening's baseball game at Paul Smith Field, but things changed that inning. Behind two home runs, Teutopolis scored four runs, matched that total in the fifth and then scored five times in the sixth and defeated Effingham, 14-2 in a contest heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

Colby Utz held the Shoes to the one first inning run until there was one out in the fourth. That's when Lane Belleville took a ball the other way that ended past the first row of vehicles beyond the right field fence to make it 2-0. The next batter, Brant Bueker, turned on a ball and launched a shot over the right centerfield fence to make it 3-0. By the time the inning ended, two more runs and the Hearts were down 5-0.

Teutopolis added four more runs in the fifth on an error, a single, a double, a walk and two singles, then put the game away with the five-run sixth including an error, three consecutive doubles and a base hit, then a fourth double and a walk.

Effingham did muster two runs in the fifth inning, registering their first hit in the game during that inning on a one-out single by Parker Seachrist.

Eric Kremer got the win for Teutopolis, going 5-2/3 innings, allow two runs on just one hit, walking five and fanning four. Jason Kenter pitched the final 1-1/3 innings, allowing two hits and a walk.

Utz took the loss for the Hearts, allowing five runs, four earned, 3-1/3 innings, giving up six hits and two walks with one strikeout. Bryce Lohman pitched 1 inning, allowing four runs, three earned, on three hits and a walk with one strikeout. Brett Koester pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits. Ryan Sandifer pitched the final inning, giving up one hit and walking two.

Teutopolis improved to 17-6 on the season, while Effingham fell to 16-2. 

In the junior varsity contest, Teutopolis edged Effingham 3-2. The Shoes held a 3-0 lead until the top of the seventh when the Hearts came back with two runs only to fall short.
