Hearts Split Saturday Doubleheader

TAYLORVILLE -- The Effingham Hearts split their Saturday Apollo Conference baseball doubleheader at Taylorville.

Effingham claimed the opener 10-0. The Hearts tallied four runs in the second, three in the third, one in the fourth and ended the game in the fifth with two runs.

Carter Hayes had a double and drove in two runs for the Hearts. Brennan Poland, Lane Koenig and Adam Koester had two singles each. Hayes had five RBI and Poland and Koester had two each.

Braydon Bone picked up the pitching win on a two-hitter with one walk and nine strikeouts.

In the second game, the Tornadoes edged the Hearts 2-1. The score was knotted at 1-1 after three ininngs before Taylorville tallied what would prove to be the winning run in the fourth.

Both teams had four hits. Three of Taylorville's hits were doubles.

Koester led the Hearts with two singles. Hudson Graham was the tough-luck loser on the mound going six innings, allowing four hits, two walks while striking out eight.

The Hearts are now 10-10 on the season.

In junior varsity play, Efifngham blanked Taylorville 3-0 before the Tornadoes won over EHS 11-6.
