Betty A. Slifer (78) of Effingham

Betty A. Slifer, 78, of Effingham, IL, went to be with the Lord at 11:56 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2012, peacefully at her home.
Private family graveside services will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Effingham. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 22, 2012 at Johnson Funeral Home, Effingham, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Effingham County Humane Society, Lincolnland Hospice, Friends of St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Effingham, or St. John’s Lutheran Church, Effingham.
Betty was born on August 21, 1933 in Effingham, the daughter of William C. and Nola B. (Smith) Martin. She married LeRoy W. Slifer on March 6, 1953 in Effingham, and he survives.
Betty, along with her husband ‘Bud”, owned and operated Double B Western Store, Effingham for more than 36 years, and before that she was a long time employee at Montgomery Ward's, Effingham. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Effingham. Betty loved oil painting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and walking with her friends at the mall. She looked forward to the monthly luncheons with her “Club 51” classmates. Betty was a lifetime Chicago Cubs and Illini fan. She loved watching Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and never missed Days of Our Lives.
Betty is survived by her husband of 59 years, LeRoy “Bud” Slifer of Effingham; daughter, Kenna (Steve) Endebrock of Effingham; son, Troy Slifer of Effingham; grandchildren, Kayla Endebrock of Effingham and (fiance, Doug Bierman), Kent Endebrock of Teutopolis and (fiancee, Jamie Stone), and Cody Slifer of rural Beecher City; and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
Betty was loved by many and will be missed by all, especially her faithful companions, “Tag” and “Maggie.”
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Donald ‘Tude” Martin and Lewis “Lew” Martin, and sister, Lera Long.
