Frankie was born on June 7, 1938, in rural Stewardson, IL, the son of Glen G. and Fern L. (Von Behren) Brandt. He began working for his father both on the farm and on the canned milk route. Frankie and his father picked up milk from area dairy farmers and trucked it to the Litchfield Dairy daily.
