Donald W. "Red" Mehl, 88 of Effingham, Illinois, passed away peacefully at 5:10 AM Tuesday, September 12, 2023 in his residence surrounded by family.

He was born March 9, 1935 in Trowbridge, Illinois the son of Walter A. and Helen M. (Russell) Mehl. Mr. Mehl served eight years in the Illinois National Guard and was employed for forty two years at John Boos & Company in Effingham and also at K Bowl bowling lanes in Effingham, Illinois for forty years, and also farmed part time for over thirty years. Mr. Mehl married Charlotte Wines May 14, 1955 and she passed away June 30, 2015. Red enjoyed spending time with family and friends and target shooting his rifles in his retirement his favorite past time was to play golf and he was a avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He was a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sigel, Illinois, A Life Member of The National Rifle Association, the Illinois Rifle Association and the Lutheran Layman’s League in Sigel, Illinois.

He is survived by his sons, Stanley Mehl (Sue) of Altamont, Illinois, Timothy Mehl (Amy) of Effingham, Illinois and Doyle Mehl (Kris) of Heartville, Illinois; daughter, Dawn Florido of Effingham, Illinois; brothers, Wendell Mehl of Olney, Illinois and David A. Mehl of Kansas City, Missouri; sisters, Leona Czerwonka (Donald) of Tuscola, Illinois and June McKenna (Tim) of Mattoon, Illinois; sixteen grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Charlotte Mehl; son, Chad A. Mehl; daughter Debra Bosomworth; sister, Carol Koester and granddaughter Kimberly Dawn Florido; son in law Kenneth Florido. Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association.

Funeral Services will be at 10:00 am Friday, September 15, 2023 in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sigel, Illinois. Visitation will be held Friday September 15, 2023 from 9:00 am until service time also in the church. Burial will be in the Swedish Lutheran Cemetery in Big Spring Township Shelby County, Illinois.
