Robert Bernard “Bob” Schuette, 76, of Effingham, IL, passed away on Monday, July 10, 2023 at home surrounded by his loving family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 14, 2023 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham. Burial will be held in St. Anthony Cemetery in Effingham with military rites. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 13, 2023 at the church followed by a 7:00 p.m. Knights of Columbus Rosary. Services are in the care of Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham.

Robert was born on March 21, 1947, in Effingham, IL, to Robert S. and Florence (Jansen) Schuette. He married Barbara Jane McDevitt on May 6, 1967. They had 3 children, Brian (Kenda) Schuette, Todd (Lisa) Schuette, and Carmen (Eric Schumacher) Schuette.

He has 12 grandchildren, Alicia (Clay) Winskill, Abigail (Derek) Line, Blake (Rachel) Thoele, Molly (Dustin) Vogt, Jacob (Claire) Schuette, Beau Schuette, Sara Thoele, Madison Schuette, Benjamin Schuette, Gabriel Schuette, Morgan Schuette, and James Schuette; and 8 (soon to be 9) great-grandchildren, Jacqueline and Caroline Vogt, Joel and Madden Winskill, Kinley and Leona Line, Nolan Thoele, and Grayson Schuette.

Bob was the eldest of 12 children. His siblings are Mary Ellen Mayhall, Patricia (Roy) Wendling, Chuck (Jan) Schuette, Jeanne Schuette, Jan Sensel, Jody (Dean) Kinkelaar, Tim (Jeanie) Schuette, David (Jamie) Schuette, Gregg (Barb) Schuette, Jeff Schuette, and Lee (Lori) Schuette.

Bob graduated from St. Anthony High School in 1965 and attended Regis College in Denver, Colorado on a basketball scholarship in 1966. He joined the United States Navy in 1967 and served aboard the USS Shenandoah until 1971. He was a licensed plumber and pipefitter and was part-owner of Wente Plumbing and Heating in Effingham for 36 years. He retired in 2007.

He was an avid golfer and especially loved playing with his wife, sons, daughter, and grandsons. He was a perfectionist and had a competitive streak. He enjoyed traveling, spending winters in Gulf Shores, Alabama, where many new friends entered his life. He loved attending his children’s, grandchildren’s, and great-grandchildren’s events and activities- he was their biggest fan.

Bob was a lifelong member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Effingham Knights of Columbus 665, St. Anthony Booster Club, and the Effingham American Legion Post 120. He enjoyed volunteering at the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, Florida for several years. Most of all, he loved his visits and time spent with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Carl Sensel.
