Gary was born on June 30, 1957 in Effingham, IL, the son of Frank and Mildred (Swingler) Vahling. He married Lisa Stanley on September 17, 1983, in Effingham, IL, and she survives. Gary retired from the Village of Teutopolis after 35 years. He most recently worked for Roy Schmidt Honda. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis and an active member of Teutopolis Knights of Columbus. Gary was a 4th Degree Knight who recently was inducted in the 4th Degree Hall of Fame. To Gary, family was everything and the center of his world. Whether that was making sure everything was taken care of at his children’s home or mowing the yard on his John Deere. He was always fixing something or helping others out when needed. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren. He attended all their games and was Sigel St. Michael’s “biggest fan” and would often take them on adventures riding the lawn mower around the yard.

Gary is survived by his wife, Lisa Vahling of Teutopolis; daughters, Wendy (Matt) Ordner of Sigel and Jennifer (Travis) Wendt of Teutopolis; grandchildren, Caleb, Kaelyn, and Zachary Ordner, and Lowen Wendt; and siblings, Larry (Kay) Vahling, Mary Ann McClanahan, Judy Vahling, and sister-in-law Cheryl Vahling.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James “Jim” Vahling (along with sister-in-law Cheryl P. Vahling Woodard), John Vahling and brother-in-law, Jack McClanahan.
