Gary Eugene Guinn, 73, of Flora, passed away at 1:11 am Sunday, May 14, 2023 at the Clay County Hospital in Flora, Illinois.

Gary was born in Clay County, Illinois on June 18, 1949 the son of Francis E. and Beulah Althea (Young) Guinn. Gary served his country honorably in the US Navy from 1969 to 1971 during the Vietnam era, and then was in the reserves for a time following his active duty. Gary worked as a truck driver and retired from that. In his youth we had attended the Oak Street Baptist Church in Flora. Some of Gary’s activities in life was he loved to go fishing, watching the St. Louis Cardinals, and watching old westerns on TV. He loved to go out and eat and talking on the phone with his friends, and he loved his family and grandson dearly. He loved to talk and go fishing with his best friend, Montie Persinger, they either did something or talked on the phone with each other every day.

Gary is survived by his daughters: Sherry Guinn of Kenton, Tennessee, and Jeanie and Amy; grandson: Garrison Hutcheson of Kenton, Tennessee; his siblings: Louise Eckelberry of Flora, Rita (Bert) Cosner of Louisville, Jerry Guinn of Flora, Roger Guinn of Louisville, Rose Anderson of Louisville, Ann (Jack) Stanford of Louisville, John (Shelly) Guinn of Flora, Wayne (Sherry) Guinn of Flora. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; brother: Larry Michael Guinn; sister: Althea Mae Lewis; brother-in-law: Joe Eckelberry.

Funeral services to celebrate Gary’s life will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, May 19, 2023 at the McGriff Funeral Home in Flora with Carroll Ross officiating. Burial will follow with military honors at the Elmwood Cemetery, Flora. Visitation will be held on Friday at the funeral home where friends may call from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Gary’s memory to the Clay County Cancer Crusaders or to the family to assist with final expenses, and envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
