Betty Louise Matlock, age 92, of Newton, Illinois, passed away at 5:30 AM - Friday, May 5, 2023, at her daughter’s home in Newton, Illinois.
Private family services will be held with burial in the Trexler Cemetery west of Newton, Illinois. Arrangements are under the care of the Meyer Funeral Home in Newton, Illinois. The obituary can be viewed, and condolences left by clicking here.
Betty was born on January 4, 1931, in Decatur, Illinois, the daughter of Albert M. and Hazel Miranda (Spurling) Durbin. She married Herbert E. Matlock on September 20, 1947, in Decatur, Illinois, and he preceded her in death on November 12, 1997. Betty worked as custodian at Newton Community High School from 1973, until her retirement in 1991. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, sitting on the front porch, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Betty is survived by: Daughter – Sandy Lamb of Newton, Illinois; Grandchildren – John Matlock, Dawn (Jimmie) Chronis, Tina (Brad) Hazel, Eric Lamb, Jason Schafer, Kevin Schafer, and Aaron Schafer; Great Grandchildren – Theo Chronis, Evan Chronis, Ashley (Tyler) Gibbs, and Angela (Kenny) Powell; Great-great Grandchildren – Shane Michl, Rezzie Gibbs, Daytona Gibbs, Lance Powell, Lloyd Powell, Maddie Powell, and Evelyn Schafer and one to be born in September 2023; Son-in-law – Lynn Schafer of Wheeler, Illinois; Sister-in-law – Carol (Kenny) Mitchell of Farina, Illinois.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughters Linda Decker and Pam Schafer, siblings Wilber Durbin, Herbert Durbin, Delmar Durbin and Shirley Reed and her father and motherin-law John and Lucille Matlock.
