Max Naab Stevens, 57, of Cowden, IL, passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2023, in HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham with loved ones by his side.

Max was born on February 25, 1965, in Vandalia, the son of Arthur Joseph “Buckwheat” and Vonita Faye (Naab) Stevens. He was a 1983 graduate of Cowden-Herrick High School where he enjoyed playing basketball. Max loved playing cards, counting change, playing bingo and Yahtzee, milk shakes, watching the St. Louis Cardinals and the Illinois Fighting Illini and tooling around with his sisters. He adored his nieces, nephews and his beloved dog, Chubs.

Surviving are his siblings: Marsha Kates of Cowden, Joe (Cindy) Stevens of Tuscola, Sandra Miller of Beecher City, Pam (James) Johnson of Ramsey and Paula (Evan) Schaefer of Beecher City; brother-in-law, Mike Nichols of Mode and many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.

Max was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Madonna Nichols; brothers-in-law: Jim Kates and Bruce Miller; niece, Haley Wilhour and his beloved dog, Chubs.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, in Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Cowden with Pastor Nick Robertson officiating. Burial will take place in Antioch Cemetery in rural Herrick. Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday, January 9, 2023, in Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Cowden. Memorials may be made in his name to assist with funeral expenses.
