Henry B. Verdeyen, 97, of Altamont, died at 3:53 p.m. Sunday, November 20, 2022, at his home.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at St. Clare Catholic Church, Altamont with Rev. Joseph Havrilka officiating. Burial will follow at St. Clare Cemetery, Altamont with military rites by Gieseking-Schwerdtfeger VFW Post # 7676 and Grobengieser-Fischer American Legion Post #512, Altamont. A prayer service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 22nd at Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont followed by visitation from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a 6:00 p.m. Fireman’s walk through and 6:30 p.m. Fireman’s Bell Service. Memorials may be made to the Altamont Volunteer Fire Department, St. Clare Church, or the donor’s choice.

Henry was born on Sunday, August 23, 1925 in Ivesdale, IL to Henry J. and Agnes (Wolfert) Verdeyen. He married Dorothy E. Willenborg on October 4, 1945 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lillyville and they enjoyed over 71 years of marriage prior to her death on August 10, 2017. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps He was a manager of Brown Produce, Farina prior to his retirement. He was a member of St. Clare Catholic Church, VFW Post 7676, Effingham Knight’s of Columbus, St. Elmo Golf Club, Effingham County Board of Review, long time Altamont volunteer firefighter and past president of the fire district, an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, and former Altamont Citizen of the Year.

He is survived by his sons; John (Dorothy) Verdeyen of Altamont and Mike (Emma) Verdeyen of Neoga; daughters, Barb Stewart of Brownstown, Jane (Roger) Meier of Centralia, and Deb Wright of Altamont; sister-in-law, Martha Bushue of Mason; 12 Grandchildren; Todd Verdeyen, Meredith Stewart, Travis Stewart, Tonya Flach, Tanner Meier, Jennifer Arnold, Dustin Meier, Jessica Arnold, Tai Kasban, Megan Althoff, Vanessa Wright, and Molly Stuckemeyer; 18 great grandchildren, Quinn, Evan, Pierce, Clayton, Logan, Olivia, Devin, Ava, Loren, Anneke, Norah, MaKenna, Hayden, Brody, Kaylee, Chase, Wade, and Sutton.

Henry was preceded in death by: his parents; wife; daughters; Patricia Jean Verdeyen and Theresa Mae Verdeyen; brothers, Robert and LaVerne Verdeyen; son-in-law, Robert Stewart, parents-in-law, Louis and Emma Willenborg, sisters-in-law, Vera and Margaret Verdeyen, Nellie Donsbach, and Pauline Holding; brothers-in-law, Virgil and Ruben Willenborg, Ben Donsbach, Oscar Holding and Earl Bushue.
