Stephen Louis McEvers, 37, of St. Elmo, formerly of Effingham, IL, passed away on Saturday, June 5,2021 as a result of injuries sustained in an all-terrain vehicle accident. Though too young at the time of his death, Stephen affected many people in his lifetime.

A public visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 11, 2021 at Johnson FuneralHome in Effingham. Private family funeral services will be held Saturday at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery in Green Creek. Memorials may be made to his daughter Sophia for her future education in care of Stephen’s parents or the donor’s choice. Stephen was born on April 13, 1984, in Barberton, OH, and moved to Effingham, IL, shortly after graduating high school. He is the oldest of two beloved children of David and Shirley (Greuel) McEvers.Stephen was deeply committed to his daughter Sophia and loved being a daddy. Stephen was also committed to many family members and many friends. He enjoyed riding ATVs, float trips, and playing Pinochle on Sundays at his grandparents. He enjoyed working on anything that ran with fuel. Purchasing modes of transportation “toys” that required a little, or more than a little, tinkering was a favorite interest of Stephen’s, as well as, helping his friends with their toys. Stephen loved working for Midwest Services Group in Vandalia. Stephen was a loyal sports fan of his home state OSU Buckeyes. Stephen made many friends in his lifetime, for he never met a stranger.

Stephen is survived by his daughter, Sophia McEvers; parents, David and Shirley McEvers; siblings,Geoffrey McEvers, Michelle Sutton, Douglas (Amanda) McEvers, Alita (Mike) Bailey, Patrick (Joanie) McEvers, Brian Hardiek, and Brad (Heidi) Hardiek; maternal grandmother, Norma Greuel; step-paternal grandmother, Joyce Ann McEvers; and many other loving family members and even many more friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Louis Greuel; paternal grandfather, Myrl McEvers; and paternal grandmother Margaret Tatman, and step-grandfather, RE Tatman.
