Samuel D. Carter, age 83, of Newton, Illinois, passed away at 12:10 AM Sunday, April 25, 2021, at Newton Care Center in Newton, Illinois.

Private family services will be held, with burial in the Aten Cemetery in Hidalgo, Illinois. In loving memory of Sam, memorials may be made to the Central Christian Church in Newton, Illinois Arrangements are under the care of the Meyer Funeral Home in Newton, Illinois. Samuel better known as Sam was born on December 3, 1937, in Jasper County, Illinois, the son of Samuel Nick and Lenora Mae (Finn) Carter. He married Linda Sowers on March 30, 1956, at the Hidalgo Christian Church in Hidalgo, Illinois, and she survives. Sam graduated from Newton Community High School in 1955. After high school he attended Eastern Illinois University. Sam was a hard worker, having worked at Briggs Pottery, Marathon Oil Refinery and for the City of Newton water department. Sam loved raising and racing standardbred harness race horses. Many memories were made during the days spent at local county fairs and the Illinois State Fair. Sam attended Central Christian Church and was a member of the United States Trotting Association. Sam’s greatest joy was spending time with his family and being a devoted grandpa.

Sam is survived by: Wife of 65 years – Linda Carter of Newton, Illinois; Daughter – Peggy (husband Scott) Laugel of Newton, Illinois; 4 Grandchildren – Jennifer (husband Kevin) Roewe of Effingham, Illinois; Victoria (husband Jason) Ochs of Newton, Illinois; Dustin (wife Sierra) of Robinson, Illinois and Dylan Laugel of Newton, Illinois; 8 Great grandchildren - Dylan (wife Rachel) Roewe, Ben Roewe, Nick Roewe, Luke Roewe, Meg Roewe, Haley Ochs, Heidi Ochs and Colton Ochs; Great great-grandchildren - Ava Roewe and Derek Roewe with another on the way.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents and sister Donna Davis.
