Winona Lee Saathoff, 85, of Greenup, IL passed away at 9:50 AM Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at her residence.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Saturday April 24, 2021 at the Barkley Funeral Chapel in Greenup, IL. Visitation will be on Friday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in the Janesville Cemetery.

Winona was born on June 10, 1935 in rural Toledo, IL to Don & Madge (Thompson) Carrell. She married John E. Saathoff on December 23, 1955 and he preceded her on April 29, 2001. Survivors include sons Micheal Saathoff special friend Melissa Nungesser and Bryon (Laura) Saathoff; four grandchildren Andrew Saathoff, Melissa (Doug) Holkenbrink, Katy (Ryan) Huntley and John (Kelli) Saathoff; great grandchildren Hannah, Easton, Emily, Alexa, Scarlett, Ruby, Nolan, Olivia, John, Finn, Charlie, and Sawyer; sister Nancy (Don) Glosser, and sister in laws Mickey Carrell, Harriet Carrell, and Dort Grider. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers James and Rodger Carrell, and sister Beverly Darter.

Winona was a 1953 graduate of Cumberland High School and went on to attend Julia F. Burnham Nursing School and graduated in 1954. She later entered Olney Central College and graduated in 1972 with an Associate Degree in Science.   Winona worked for Cumberland County as the TB nurse and later developed the Cumberland County Health Department and Home Health. Winona graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1985 and completed the School Nurse Practitioner Program at the University of Colorado; she became a certified Public Health Administrator and was involved in the Parish Nurse Program. Later in life, Winona joined Disaster Nursing, then became a member of the Medical research and this took her to Georgia and Florida to work after Hurricane Katrina.

Winona owned and operated B & M Flowers, Bridal Consultant and Catering for 17 years. Her love for flowers led her to become a Master Gardener through the University of Illinois. Winona loved her work and she gave care to so many. She touched many lives throughout her life and her legacy will live on through her family. She often said “to care, to share for all in my care” and completed 67 years in nursing. WInona was a member of the Arthur American Legion Women’s Auxiliary.
