Dorothy H. Schumacher, 93, of Sigel, IL, passed away at 5:43 p.m. on Friday, March 19, 2021, at Willowbrook Memory Support Residence in Effingham with her family by her side.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 24, 2021, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Sigel, with Fr. Sunder Ery officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery, Sigel. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., on Tuesday, March 23, 2021, at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham, IL.

Due to Covid-19 concerns, please wear a mask for all services and follow all social distancing guidelines. Limitations to gathering size will be observed. We kindly ask you to pay your respects in a timely manner.

Dorothy was born on August 17, 1927 in Teutopolis, IL, the eldest child of Frank and Gertrude (Hartke) Pruemer. She married Harold Schumacher on June 11, 1947 at St. Francis Church in Teutopolis, IL.

Dorothy lived her entire adult life in Sigel and then later on the Schumacher family dairy farm. She was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who enjoyed many happy occasions with her immediate and extended family, as well as with her numerous friends and neighbors. Dorothy had a love of sewing, which resulted in clothes, handmade quilts, and other crafts for her loved ones. She was also an avid card player and liked to garden and grow flowers, especially gladiolus. She and Harold enjoyed traveling, especially with family and friends.

Dorothy was a lifelong member of St. Michael Church in Sigel, the parish Council of Catholic Women, and the Third Order of St. Francis. She and Harold were the pro-life representatives for St. Michael Parish for many years, and belonged to the Effingham Area DeColores. They were also participants of the Eucharistic Adoration program at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital. Dorothy was an active community member. Her volunteer activities and organizations included: Sigel American Legion Auxiliary, Shelby County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee, Effingham Catholic Daughters of America, Effingham Catholic Charities, St. Anthony Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and the St. Michael School Lunch Program.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Steve (Sherri) Schumacher of Carbondale, Bob (Becky) Schumacher of Hobe Sound, FL, Lois (Henry) Hoene of Effingham, Allen (Karla) Schumacher of Sigel, Larry (Cheryl) Schumacher of Austin, TX, Carl (Linda) Schumacher of Sigel, and Greg (Jane) Schumacher of Teutopolis. She is also survived by 27 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; 5 step-great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and 7 step-great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Ruth Hoene, Norma Jean Apke, and Mary Ellen (John) Kremer; brother, Larry Pruemer; sister-in-law, Alice Pruemer; and well over 100 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Schumacher; granddaughter, Carrie Schumacher; infant brother, Arthur Pruemer; siblings and in-laws, Joe and Rosella Pruemer, Lorraine and Tom Althoff, John Hoene, Lawrence Apke, Bernie Pruemer, and Patty Pruemer.

Dorothy was the last “Schumacher Aunt” of the Ben and Kate Schumacher family of 10 children and their spouses. She will be greatly missed.
