Richard Cooley “Dick” Loy, 57, of Effingham, Illinois, passed away on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois, with his family by his side.

Private family services will be held at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham. Funeral services with Masonic Rites will be streamed on the Johnson Funeral Home Facebook Page at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 23, 2021. Burial will be in Loy Chapel Cemetery in rural Effingham with military rites. Memorials may be made to the Shriners or the American Diabetic Association. Richard was born on November 24, 1963, in Effingham, Illinois, the son of Richard W. and Rhea (Cooley) Loy. Dick graduated from Effingham High School in 1982 and was active in band. He served in the Effingham National Guard from 1983-1989 and received training in Fort Benning, Georgia. He then was stationed in Scotland and the Philippines. Dick married Kimberly Welch on April 30, 1997. He worked at Irwin Seating Company in Altamont, Illinois. He was a member of Watson Masonic Lodge #602, past Worshipful Master at Effingham Masonic Lodge #149, and a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. Dick had many hobbies, including writing, traveling, riding his bike, researching family history, participating in Civil War Reenactments, and watching Christmas lights. He was a Chicago Cubs fan and loved cats. Dick enjoyed being outdoors and liked hunting, fishing, walking in the woods, hunting for mushrooms, landscaping, and gardening. Dick was a skilled carpenter. At the age of 16, he built his own cabin and eventually continued to build onto it.

Dick is survived by his wife, Kim Loy of Effingham; children, Tyler Mcmullen and Makenna Loy both of Effingham; sisters, Susan (Chuck) Hoelscher, Jane (Mark) Ries, and Laurie (Bill) Foreman all of Effingham; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Robin Loy-Damron.
