Betty A. Hirtzel, 77 of Effingham, passed away Monday, November 30, 2020, at Willowbrook Memory Care in Effingham.

Private funeral services will be held at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham with entombment in Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorial donations may be given to the donor’s choice. 

Betty was born December 16, 1942, in Effingham, the daughter of  Clarence J. and Helen M. (Stuckey) Mayhaus. She married Melvin J. Hirtzel Sr. on April 23, 1960, and he preceded her in death on September 28, 2018.

Betty was a well-known fixture in Effingham from her days as the proprietor of the Hirtzel Coin Laundry in Effingham from 1980 until her retirement in 2013. She turned the coin-operated business into much more than just washers and dryers; it was a part of the community. Betty was also a professional level seamstress who was well-known for her Christmas tree skirts and window treatments.

Betty is survived by her sons, Melvin (Cathlene) and David (Pamella), both of Effingham; grandchildren, Daniel, Kristi, Jeremy, and Melissa; great-grandchildren, Wyatt Hawkins, Conrad Barker, Lincoln and Oliver Hirtzel.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband and infant daughter, Angela Ann.
