Maxine (Hout) McWhorter, 85, of Effingham, IL, passed away on Friday, November 13, 2020 at her home.

A public walk-through visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 21, 2020 at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham. Private family graveside services will be held at Arborcrest Memorial Park in Effingham.

Maxine was born on September 7, 1935, in Effingham, IL, the daughter of Clayton and Bonnie (Leith) Hout. She married Ernest B. “Ernie” McWhorter on February 24, 1952. He preceded her in death in 2004.

Maxine was a dedicated caregiver to her family, which was her joy. She was the family’s biggest source of support. She always worked extremely hard and always enjoyed the work she did. Maxine and Ernie enjoyed remodeling old houses and even built their own house that the family still lives in now. Maxine worked at Crossroads in the press room and made some very good friends there. Maxine enjoyed decorating, sewing clothes and curtains, and tending her beautiful flowers in in the front of her house. Maxine was a strong, detail-oriented person who always stood up for what she believed and who she loved.

Maxine is survived by her daughter, Rhonda (Joel) Griffith of Effingham; granddaughter, Bridget Welter (Andy); great-grandchildren, Vivyona, Camdyn, and Kaisyn; sister, Rita Wilson of Vermont; niece, Angie McBride (Eric) of Vermont; great-niece, Julia McBride; great-nephew, Logan McBride; and many other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ernie; and nephew, Chad Wilson.
