Robert Leon Ooton, formerly of Effingham, passed away on Saturday, August 8, 2020 at Ascension St Vincent’s Hospital in Jacksonville, FL.

Leon was born October 1, 1946 in Effingham, IL, the son of Jack and Lois (Cosner) Ooton. He married Diane McClain on October 7, in St Petersburg, FL. Leon loved to bass fish and shared that love with many other fishermen. He also loved his University of Florida Gators. Leon loved and worked with greyhounds for over 30 years and will be greatly missed by the community. Leon served his country in the United States Army from 1965 to 1968 as a first lieutenant.

He is survived by his wife Diane, mother Lois Ooton, son Mike and wife Felicia, daughter Krista Napier and husband David, stepsons Mark (Linda) McClain , Jerry (Danielle) McClain, and step daughter Andrea McClain, 11 grand-children and several great grand-children. He is also survived by his sisters, Phyllis (Tom) Reardon, Diana Nuxoll and brother, Jack (Sally) Ooton as well as many nieces and nephews.

Hardage Giddins Funeral Home in Jacksonville, Florida has been entrusted with his final arrangements. The family is currently not planning any services. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to The Greyhound Pets of America or St Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Leon was preceded in death by his father, Jack Ooton and brother-in-law Russ Nuxoll.
