Doris J. (Raney) Lee, age 93, of Casey, IL passed away at 8:50 a.m. Saturday, January 4, 2020 at Harrison’s Crossing, Terre Haute, IN.

She was born November 12, 1926 in Cleveland, Ohio the daughter of Charles E. and Marie Bobel Raney. On December 28, 1951 she married Ralph W. Lee in Casey, IL; he passed away on April 19, 1993.

She is survived by sons, Gary E. Lee of Casey, IL and Paul W. Lee and wife Marsha McVey Lee of Casey, IL; grandson, Jeffrey Alan Lee and wife Heather Uchtman Lee and their children, Miles Jeffrey and Emerson Marie Lee of Casey, IL; sister in law, Leona Lee of East Windsor, NJ; brothers in law, Jim Lee (Betty) of Casey, IL and Charles Swinford, Hillsborough, NC; many nephews and nieces, those living locally are Bill Lee (Monica); Mike Sherwood (Cathy) and Greg Lee all of Casey, IL; Nancy Totten (Bill) of Effingham, IL; Barbara Konrad (Kurt) of Shumway, IL; Dr. Randy Lee (Susan) of Indianapolis, IN; Sue Huber (Clarence) of Taylorville, IL; and others in various areas of the country are Scott Todd (Marcia); Amy Swinford (Rod); Mark Swinford (Susan); Emerson Swinford (Sarah); Hal Lawless (Becky); Bob Lawless (Susie); Susan Raney Scott; Jon Raney and Jim Raney and many great nephews and great nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, an infant sister; brother, Jack Raney of Eastlake, OH; nephews, Gordon Todd, Brent Lawless and Jack Raney, Jr.

Doris’s mother died when she was in fifth grade and her father died when she was a junior in high school and her only brother was soon in the Pacific Theater of War during World War II. Dear friends helped her as she completed high school and worked her way through college. She had jobs in a deli, a pharmacy, grocery store, department store and an office for summer employment. Doris graduated Cum Laude from the University of Minnesota and received her Master’s degree from Eastern Illinois University. She was a lifelong teacher in the Casey Westfield school system first as an English, Speech and Spanish teacher. During these years she directed plays and won in competition at the state level for one-act dramas. Later she was high school guidance counselor until her retirement. Following retirement, she was an active substitute teacher for a number of years. Doris was an avid supporter of Casey Westfield activities. Doris was active in many organizations: Past President, Vice President and Secretary of Clark County Retired Teachers Association; Secretary of Mint To Garden Club; Adult Class Leader for over 30 years at Casey United Methodist Church; served on numerous Church committees, Life Member of Illinois Education Association; Member of Bound by Books Club; Casey Country Club; Marathon Bridge Club; former 4-H Leader; former member and past secretary of Cumberland County Historical and Genealogical Society; member of Casey Historical Society; member and past chairperson of Friends of the Library; member of Casey Athletic Boosters and Decatur Civil War Round Table. Doris loved to read and had visited many countries in her travels; she enjoyed her fitness group, liked to shop and enjoyed sharing time with her many friends. Above all was her love for her family and family time.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 8 at Markwell Funeral Home in Casey with Rev. Gary Fairchild officiating. Burial will follow in the Casey Cumberland Cemetery, Casey, IL. Visitation will be held from 4 – 7 p.m. Tuesday evening at Markwell Funeral Home, 200 N. Central Ave., Casey, IL.
