Sara E. Hammes, 83, of Seneca died on Thursday, August 2, 2018.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, August 7 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Bailyville. Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 Monday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.

Sara was born on September 29, 1934, in Teutopolis, Illinois the daughter of Joseph and Kathleen Sharpe Habing. She attended school and graduated from Teutopolis High School in 1953. After graduation, she went to Nursing School and graduated as a RN. During her career she worked at KU Medical Center and St. Luke’s Hospital, both in Kansas City, mentoring and teaching in those hospitals.

On August 17, 1971 Sara married Alvin Hammes at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Kansas City; they made their home in Westwood with their daughter, Linda. The couple moved to Seneca after they retired, on April 15, 2000. Sara was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and St. Ann’s Altar Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Joseph, Patrick and George Habing; and four sisters, Kathleen Nolan, Lucy Hornbeck, Mary Jane McGee and Joyce Berchtold.

Sara is survived by her husband, Alvin, of 46 years; her daughter, Linda Hammes of Seneca; a brother, Dennis Habing of Teutopolis Illinois; and many nieces and nephews and cousins in the Teutopolis and Effingham area.

Memorials can be given in Sara’s memory to Sts. Peter and Paul Church and/or the Nemaha County Training Center, sent in care of the family.
