Lawrence John “Larry” Barns, 74, of Altamont, Illinois, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at 10:35 a.m. on Thursday, June 1, 2017.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 6 at St. Clare Roman Catholic Church in Altamont with burial in St. Clare Catholic Cemetery, Altamont. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service followed by Altamont Lions Club Burial Rites at Kull Funeral Home in Altamont. Memorials may be made in loving memory of Larry to The Whoo Hoo Sisterhood, Altamont Sports Boosters, or the donor’s choice.

Larry was born on March 30, 1943, in Effingham, IL, the son of Henry and Mary Catherine (Shab) Barns. He graduated from Altamont Community High School and Murray State University. He married Kay Blom on June 1, 1968, at St. Clare Roman Catholic Church, Altamont, and she survives. Larry was the owner of Barns Realty in Altamont. He was very involved in the community and passionate about the success of his hometown. Larry was a member of St. Clare Roman Catholic Church, the Altamont Chamber of Commerce, Altamont Lions Club, the Altamont Education Foundation, and the Blue Knights. He supported local sports and was devoted to watching his children and grandchildren compete. Larry found great joy hunting and fishing with his family and friends. He also took pleasure assisting at the horse races at the Effingham County Fair. Larry was a witty man, known for his sense of humor.

Larry is survived by his wife, Kay Barns of Altamont; sons, Michael (wife, Michelle Wernsing) Barns of Altamont, Neil (wife, Bailey Lustig) Barns of Effingham; daughters, Sarah (husband, Rick) Casavechia of Chicago, Katie (husband, Jon) Berg of Altamont; grandchildren, Hannah Barns, Addison and Carson Casavechia, Della and Blake Berg, and Avie Barns; and sister, Rita Barns of Altamont.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Eugene Barns; and grandson, Hunter Barns.
