Hattie Jane Clapp age 92 of Newton passed away Friday, January 15, 2016 at Burgin Manor, Olney, Illinois.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 18 at Scott Avenue Christian Church, Newton. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday in the church.  Burial will be in the West Lawn Cemetery, Newton. Memorial gifts in honor of Hattie may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Crain Funeral Home, Newton is in charge of the arrangements.

Hattie was born on December 18, 1923 in Clay County, Illinois the daughter of David and Emma (Bedwell) Hinkel. On January 1, 1942, Hattie married John A. Clapp. He preceded her in death on April 18, 2011. Hattie devoted her life to raising her children and being a farmer’s wife. Hattie was a lifelong member of the Free Methodist Church of Newton. Through the years, she taught Sunday school and was active with the music and the nursing home ministries. She enjoyed baking and taking special treats to the residents. Hattie enjoyed gardening, crocheting, knitting, and sewing. 

Hattie will be loved and remembered by her children Wayne Clapp, wife Becky and Glen Clapp, wife Faye both of Newton; daughter Beverly Clapp of Oswego, IL; grandchildren, Amy Bickers, husband Steve of Newton, Steve Clapp, wife Amy of Mundelein, IL, Reese Bernier of Prophetstown, IL; Tyler Clapp of Aldi, VA, Abbie Walden, husband Brandon of Newton, and Trenton Clapp of Newton; great-grandchildren Clayton Bickers, wife Brooke of Evansville, IN, Dylan Bickers of Newton, Nathan and Justin Clapp of Mundelein, Branden and Ethan Bernier of Plano, and Aubree and Brylee Walden;  brother Woodrow Hinkel of Olney and sister-in-law Edna Hinkel of Olney.

Her parents, husband John, brothers Ira, Perry and Scott Hinkel and sisters Hazel Porter, Bernice Hinkel, Lucille Stine, and Pauline Rule preceded her in death.
