Mary Ellen O'Brien, 58, of Effingham, Illinois passed away Saturday, April 21, 2012 at her home surrounded by loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 26 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to St. Anthony Grade School in Effingham or to the St. Anthony Council of Catholic Women, in Mary Ellen's name. Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham is assisting with local arrangements.

Mary Ellen was born May 11, 1953, the daughter of Wesley and Joyce (Jahnke) Wilson. A teacher and inspiration throughout her life, her generosity and faith had a profound effect on all who had ever met her. As an elementary school teacher for 20 years at St. Anthony of Padua Grade School in Effingham. Mary Ellen had an unforgettable impact on the lives of countless students and teachers. As a beacon of faith, she had a remarkable impact on both clergy and lay person. As a mother, a wife, a sister, a grandmother and a cousin, her joy of life and her desire to help others was unmatched. Those who have met her will never forget her and those who have not will still enjoy her prayers. 

She is survived by her husband, David J. O'Brien; children, Stephen (wife Ashley) O'Brien of New Athens, Sean (wife Julie) O'Brien of Teutopolis and Kevin O'Brien; sisters and brothers, Janet (husband Randy) Kath, Eileen (husband Gene) White, Wesley (wife Vicki) Wilson and Daniel (wife Erica) Wilson; grandchildren, Dylan O'Brien, Molly O'Brien and Abigail O'Brien.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her parents.
