Alfred H. "Al" Apke, 64 of Effingham, passed away at 2:00 a. m. Friday, March 14, 2014 at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a. m. Monday, March 17, 2014 at St. Mary Help of Christian Catholic Church, Green Creek with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p. m. to 7:00 p. m. Sunday evening at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham with a 7:00 p. m. parish wake service. Memorials may be made to the Family Life Center or the Sigel Community Center/Gym Fund or Donor's Choice.

Al was born September 21, 1949 in Effingham County, the son of Joseph and Alberta (Hilt) Apke. He married Elizabeth M. "Betty" Meyer on August 15, 1968 in Green Creek and she survives. Al worked for World Color Press in Effingham for over 30 years and was a member of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Green Creek. Al was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed coon hunting, deer hunting and fishing. Al also enjoyed playing golf.

Al is survived by his wife, Betty of Effingham; six children, Mark Apke of Effingham, Joe (Sara) of Ashland, MA, Christy (Andy) Baker of Trilla, Karen (Alan) Hanfland of Sigel, Julie (Stan) Habing of Bishop Creek and Donna (Nate) Mihlbachler of Sigel; two brothers, Dale (Carol) Apke of Effingham and Jim (Marilyn) Apke of Decatur; two sisters, Dolores Jean (Jim) Slaughter of Hinsdale and Joyce (Fred) Buhler of Effingham; eleven grandchildren, Ellie and Sydney Hanfland, Kate and Megan Baker, George and Olivia Habing, Mason, Thomas, Andrew and Kathryn Apke and Henry Mihlbachler.

Al was preceded in death by his parents. He was a great husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by all.
