A Bement tradition of music, history and summer fun continues July 17 as Bryant Cottage State Historic Site hosts its 30th annual Heritage Sunday.

Visitors can gather on the cottage lawn to enjoy the afternoon filled with period music by High Cotton, a local bluegrass band. Feel free to bring a blanket or lawn chairs to the concert, which begins at 4 p.m.

Ice cream will be served to the audience when the band takes a break. The afternoon will conclude with a second set of music by High Cotton.

The site will also be showing off its gardens, including a front garden with a new picket fence. All the gardens, which are maintained by Piatt County's University of Illinois Master Gardeners, feature flowers or herbs that would have been found in Bement 150 years ago.

A member of the Master Gardener team will be on site during Heritage Sunday. Their mission is two-fold – to discuss the gardens at the historic site and to answer general questions about gardening.

Heritage Sunday festivities will be canceled if bad weather rolls in.

Bryant Cottage State Historic Site is the 1856 home of early Bement businessman Francis E. Bryant, a friend of Stephen A. Douglas. Lincoln and Douglas met there to discuss their famed debates for the 1858 Senate race.

The site is located at 146 E. Wilson Street and is open 9-5 Thursday through Sunday for free tours. For more information, call 217-678-8184 or visit www.bement.com/bryant.htm.

Bryant Cottage is operated by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. IHPA protects the state's historic resources, which contribute to education, culture and the economy. Its sites include ancient burial mounds, forts and buildings erected by settlers, and homes connected to famous Illinoisans.
