Former Effingham County State's Attorney Paula Phillips has died.

Phillips, who has lived in Florida for the past several years, was found dead at her residence near Ocala on Sunday morning.  She had been battling cancer in recent years.  She was 73 years old.

Phillips served as State's Attorney from 1988 to 1992, having defeated Richard Runde for the office and then losing a bid for re-election to Kevin Parker.  She sought the office again in 2004, but was defeated by incumbent Ed Deters.

Reports are that the body was being cremated and the ashes scattered at sea.
