A 30-year-old Louisville man has drowned in Forbes Lake near Omega.
Marion County Deputy Coroner Troy Cannon identifies the victim as Rodney Wilson. Wilson was located with a sonar unit used by the Shelby County Dive Team in about 14 feet of water 75 feet from shore. Effingham County Dive Rescue Team members then recovered the body a few minutes after 10pm Wednesday.
Cannon reports that Wilson was with friends and family at the lake about 7pm Wednesday when he decided to try and swim to the end of the markers in the deeper section of water. Wilson, who Cannon said was not a strong swimmer, apparently realized he wasn't going to make it and had turned around to begin swimming back toward shore when he went under. A man swimming with him attempted to prevent the drowning, but nearly went under himself trying to do so.
Cannon says witnesses indicated alcohol may have played a role. He hopes to determine that as well as confirm the cause of death as drowning during an autopsy planned for today. Cannon notes alcohol is prohibited in the beach area of Forbes State Park.
The beach, full of those celebrating the 4th of July, were cleared for the attempt to locate Wilson's body. The Marion County Emergency Services and Disaster Agency, Kinmundy-Alma Fire Department, Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Marion County Sheriff's Department also assisted with the incident.
