High winds did damage in the south part of Effingham around 7:15am today.

The damage included downed trees and limbs. A power line fell across South Banker Street, closing the roadway until repairs were completed.

Ralph Walters lives at 208 Jaycee Avenue. Walters said he was sitting in the southeast corner of his home when he heard a loud roaring sound accompanied by the winds. Much of the shingles and tar paper were taken off the roof of the house. His mailbox was bent back off the stand along the street and debris hitting the west side of his house left holes in the siding. There was also damage done when a tree fell onto a home along Mt. Vernon Avenue.

Much of the roof was taken off a vacant mobile home in Easy Breeze Mobile Home Park.

Effingham Assistant Fire Chief Matt Kulesza said on scene that there were incidents of glass breakage and downed utility sheds. Kulesza said the air handling units were taken off Puerto Vallarta restaurant and damage was done to the building. He said the business will be closed for a couple of weeks until repairs can be completed.
