One person was killed and another was critically injured in a three-vehicle collision east of Altamont along US Route 40 Monday afternoon.

The person fatally injured in the crash was 44-year-old Michelle Miller of Altamont. Miller was taken from the scene to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham, where she was pronounced dead. Two passengers in the van Miller was driving were examined, but then released.

Illinois State Police report a truck driven by 54-year-old Joseph Beshel of Brownstown was traveling south on 450th Street, while a SUV driven by 34-year-old Aaron Koonce of Altamont was traveling east and the van driven by Miller was traveling west. Police say all three vehicles collided at the intersection.

Koonce was airlifted for treatment to a St. Louis hospital. Beshel reported no injuries on scene.

Beshel was cited for disobeying a stop sign.

The crash happened at approximately 2:45pm. Route 40 was closed during the crash investigation and was re-opened at approximately 6:40pm.

Illinois State Police, Effingham County Sheriff's Office, and the Effingham County Coroner's Office are investigating the crash.
