The Illinois State Board of Elections has ruled that St. Rep. Blaine Wilhour can be on the ballot for the 2024 primary election, but that St. Rep. Adam Niemerg is off the ballot, at least for now.

The Board considered challenges to the nominating petitions of each legislator Thursday in Springfield.

In Wilhour's case, Wilhour had filed a Statement of Economic Interest with the Board of Elections, but a copy was not filed with the Illinois Secretary of State. The recommendation to the Board by a hearing officer was that the challenge be overruled, and that was the decision of the Board Thursday.

Wilhour is being challenged for the Republican nomination in the 110th District by Matthew Hall of Vandalia. Wilhour lives near St. Elmo.

In Niemerg's case, his statement of candidacy was not notarized, although Niemerg said the paperwork was filled out. He plans to release a statement on the Board's decision and his plans.

Niemerg could take the matter to court. Also, State Board of Elections spokesman Matt Dietrich said Niemerg could also seek the endorsements of the Republican chairmen in the counties in the 102nd House District and obtain at least 500 signatures to get back on the ballot. The nominating petitions previously gathered are no longer valid.

Niemerg was running unopposed in the Republican primary.

The Illinois primary election this year is set for Tuesday, March 19.
