(THE GRAIN BIN THAT COLLAPSED THURSDAY AFTERNOON IN TOLEDO IS SEEN IN FRONT SURROUNDED BY THE QUANTITY OF CORN THAT POURED FROM THE BIN)

One man was killed and another was injured when the top of a grain bin collapsed Thursday afternoon in Toledo.

The incident occurred at 2:30pm at the Ervin Farms elevator on the north side of Toledo.

Cumberland County Coroner Steve Sherwood said the man killed was Roger Swim, 64, of Greenup.

Toledo Fire Chief Chuck Layton said Swim was working at the grain facility and was outside the bin at the time of the collapse. Layton said neighbors heard a sound like when a truckload of metal passes by. There was no explosion; it appears that when the corn was being removed from the bin, the bin began to collapse, causing a large quantity of grain to come rushing onto the surrounding ground and trapping Swim beneath. By the time Swim could be recovered, he had died. Sherwood pronounced Swim dead at the scene.

Toledo firefighters were assisted by fire companies from Greenup, Sigel, Lincoln Fire Protection Company, and Neoga, as well as MABAS officials from Charleston.

All emergency crews aside from those from Toledo had cleared the scene by about 4pm.
