Dieterich is always a busy place, but the first part of 2024 could be one of the busiest seasons yet.

Dieterich village board members this week discussed three separate events that could be held between April and July.

Dieterich's 4th of July celebration is annually one of the biggest, but two more events could be festive occasions. One is the solar eclipse, set for April 8th. Dieterich is to be cloaked in darkness for a full two minutes during the eclipse.

Dieterich Village Clerk Brittny Gipson said she and the Board brainstormed how to plan for the event, in the wake of the craziness of the traffic that headed north from Carbondale home during the last eclipse. Gipson said they discussed food trucks and porta potties, since those will be needed if traffic is at a standstill. Another consideration is determining a large parking area.

Meanwhile, the third event in addition to July 4th and the eclipse in April would be Zip Code Day.

Dieterich's zip code is 62424. Coincidentally, that date comes up next year on June 24th.

At this point, there could be a celebration for each date or maybe a simple notation of the group of dates. We will keep you up to date.

In the meantime, the Dieterich board worked with a family in town who has a water leak. The consensus is that repairs need to be made to the leak and then the Village will consider how to address the water bill for the property.

The Board approved a final plat of what will be known as Tyler Niemerg Subdivision. The property involves the former Mark's Market building along Route 33 and the adjoining vacant lot. Plans are currently for Modern Stitch Boutique to locate in part of the Mark's Market building with the remainder to be developed as Railyard Bar and Grill. The vacant lot will be developed for parking.

Board members also discussed a proposal from a company known as PGAV for additional TIF services for the village, both what revenue might be generated and how it could be utilized.
