A multi-semi collision stopped travel in both directions on Interstate 70 just east of Teutopolis Wednesday afternoon.

The crash was reported at 3:32pm. The roadway was finally re-opened at 11:42pm.

Teutopolis Fire Protection District Chief Tim McMahon said five semi cabs and three trailers were involved in the crash with four of the cabs and all three trailers catching fire. Illinois State Police report that one truck tractor semi trailer went over the concrete barrier separating the two lanes and into the opposite lane of travel, resulting in the crash and subsequent fire. The rigs on fire were in the lane carrying traffic eastbound or in the median, but the volume of smoke was such that travel was stopped in both directions. Interstate 70 is being reconstructed east of Effingham to near Greenup. At present, the two eastbound lanes are being rebuilt and resurfaced, with traffic sharing the westbound lanes.

A number of fire companies and police agencies assisted at the scene, along with Rural Med EMS. A helicopter also landed at the scene and airlifted an injured individual for treatment. No fatalities resulted from the incident.
