Members of the Effingham County Board's Executive Committee Monday discussed the process of finding candidates to serve on county committees.

While a number of committees consist of county board members, there are a number of other committees made up of volunteers. One such committee discussed Monday was the County Housing Authority.

Often, the current members of the committee suggest successors when another member dies or for other reasons leaves the committee. County Board member Norbert Soltwedel, though, suggested a system where public notice would be required to let the community know of such vacancies.

County Board Chairman Josh Douthit endorsed Soltwedel's proposal, and the idea will be pursued. One suggestion was posting vacancies on the county website for two weeks.

The committee also accepted Ernest Garbe's resignation from the South Central Illinois Regional Planning and Development Commission. Garbe asked not to be reappointed. He has served some 50 years on the Commission. There will be an effort to find a successor from Garbe's home area at Dieterich.

Committee members also voted to send along action on the salaries of the county sheriff and state's attorney by the full county board, and to amend the county salary schedule ordinance to reflect recent changes in pay rates.

The full county board will meet on Monday, the 17th.
