Coles County Crash Results in Atwood Man's Death

An Atwood man was fatally injured in a crash in Coles County.

81-year-old Gary Phillips was pronounced dead after being transported to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center following the crash.

The collision occurred on US Route 45 when Phillips' northbound truck attempted to pass a tractor pulling grain wagons. Phillips saw an approaching car driven by 50-year-old Rebollo Noe of Mattoon and attempted to pull back into the northbound lane. As Phillips did so, his truck struck the rear tire of the tractor, causing Phillips' truck to overturn in the roadway, where it was then struck by Noe's car.

Noe was not injured, nor was the driver of the tractor, 41-year-old John Bolin of Humboldt.

No citations have been issued regarding the crash.
