Effingham city council members Tuesday voiced support for allocating funds toward the Effingham Bark Park project.

The dog park project at Evergreen Hollow Park has been discussed by the Effingham Park District for several years. The Council decided during this year's budgeting process to earmark $30,000 toward the cost of the project.

Park District Director Jeff Althoff has indicated that work could start on the project as soon as this fall.

City Public Works Director Jeremy Heuerman reported that another grant is being sought to cover the cost of a pedestrian overpass project that would provide a route over the interstate in the area of Maple Street on the south and the upcoming easterly extension of Ford Avenue on the north. This measure and another grant would provide 80% of the project cost. The City would need to cover the 20% balance of the cost.

The Council approved a jurisdictional transfer of Althoff Drive from North Route 45 to Willenborg Street from State maintenance to City maintenance, and discussed granting a package sales and consumption liquor license to Los Amigos restaurant, planning to move into the former Pizza Hut building on Keller Drive.

City Commissioner Larry Micenheimer reported that work is progressing on the next phase of the TREC Trail. This phase is in the area of a planned park around a sandbar west of town.

Fire Chief Brant Yochum reminded that the first fire department Open House since the start of the pandemic will take place this Sunday afternoon at Fire Station #1 at Fayette and Maple.
