Two people were arrested in connection with the shooting Wednesday night of two construction workers on Interstate 57 near Dix.

According to Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Bullard, two IDOT workers were shot and injured while working at the Dix/Irvington Road exit off I-57.

The first employee was the flagger and was struck in the back of the head. The second worker came to assist the first worker and was struck in the chest. Both were taken to a local Hospital and later transferred to St. Louis University Hospital for treatment of serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Sheriff's Office Detectives were called out and identified a suspect location where the shots originated. Initial attempts to get persons inside the residence to exit were not successful.

On duty members of the Mt Vernon Police Department and Jefferson County Sheriff's Office High Risk Team responded with the armored vehicle to assist. Their efforts to get the subjects inside the residence to exit were successful.

Two juveniles were detained for questioning and a search warrant was completed for the residence in Dix.  A high-powered air rifle was seized.

The two juveniles were questioned and arrested. They were processed and released to their guardians due to their age.

The matter is still under investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
