Fire destroyed the cab of a semi early Friday afternoon at Effingham.

Firefighters were called shortly before 2pm to the Fayette Avenue on-ramp to southbound I-57/westbound I-70.

The driver, who also owns the rig, is from Henderson, Tennessee. Effingham Assistant Fire Chief Matt Kulesza said the man got out in time to avoid injury. Firefighters were able to keep the fire away from the semi trailer, which was carrying a load of cardboard boxes.

Kulesza said the fire was caused by a blown turbo.
