Effingham County 911 Board members Tuesday agreed to seek quotes for a generator for the 911 system in case of a power interruption.

The current generator has been in use since the 911 system went online in the 1990s. Due to concerns over the timeline to receive such a unit, those providing a quote on the generator will be asked to indicate the cost as well as the timeline by when the new unit could be expected.

The Board also got information that an antenna for ambulance services has been moved higher on the transmitter tower outside the County Office Building, so now work will be needed to put the frequency back into the console in the 911 dispatching points.

Concerns were shared that Shumway Fire Protection District was having difficulty communicating with ambulance agencies. The consensus, though, was that the agencies could use the county fire channel to address the problem.

City Telecommunicator Supervisor Billie Bales reported that a console should soon be installed in the City 911 training room. Bales said the project is on track for an August startup.
