Volunteers with Lake Sara Forever have worked hard for months to create a special kid-friendly atmosphere at the beach area at the lake.

Someone has attempted to spoil the fun.

On Monday night, thieves stole the Beach Playground pirate, along with the very heavy bench the pirate was chained to, and the stack of cannon balls that were next to the cannon.

Lake Sara Forever's Tom Ryan said, "The Captain is a favorite with the kids. Lake Sara Forever has tried to create a place where kids could escape the fears of school invasions, pandemics and war into a world of fun adventures and carefree fun. Parents will now have to tell their kids that the ugliness that exists in the outer world has now entered their adventure world."

Those who think this was a prank should be reminded that this act is a Class 3 Felony with a possible sentence of up to two to five years in prison. If you have information about the theft, phone the Effingham County Sheriff's Department at 217-342-2101.
