A life of serving others.

That's the case with Effingham's Carol Toney, who served as the guest speaker at the 2022 National Day of Prayer Breakfast Wednesday morning. Carol shared about her medical career, but also about her many years working in missions.

Toney shared, though, that she initially was very resistent to missions, especially Third World missions. Her mother, Adele, though was drawn to missions and it was Adele's experiences that led Carol to take a mission trip. She has never looked back.

Carol has served on the Mercy medical ship that visits less developed nations to perform surgeries to remove tumors and give people a whole new chance at life. She has taken trips to several foreign countries, too.

She shared, though, that missions doesn't have to occur far away; it can happen close to home. An example is Catholic Charities, the organization that benefitted from Wednesday's breakfast. Carol talked about many areas in which she has served, with a special passion for driving the Ramblin Rose bus to deliver school supplies, clothing and other needed items throughout this region.

Carol discussed that growing up in a family of 15 gave her special perspective on having a lot and having a little. She said that, regardless of someone's situation, showing people the love of Christ is what matters.

The morning included a time of prayer, some worshipful music, and a breakfast provided by a group of local businessmen who are Christians and choose a cause each year to support. This year's beneficiary was Catholic Charities. A total of $3,844 was collected at the event.
