Two major local transportation improvement projects are to begin on Wednesday.

One project involves three miles of construction work on US Route 40 from the Salt Creek Bridge on the east edge of Effingham, east to Teutopolis.

The other project involves construction on US Route 40 from the Fayette County line east to Division Street on the east edge of Altamont and on Illinois Route 128 from Route 40 to just north of Interstate 70.

The Effingham to Teutopolis project is valued at $2.9 million and includes resurfacing, patching, milling and sidewalk and ramp updates at various intersections.

The project from the county line to Altamont is valued at $4.5 million and includes sidewalk and ramp updates at various intersections, improvements at the intersection of US 40 and South Main Street in Altamont, patching, milling and resurfacing.

The Illinois Department of Transportation said motorists can expect delays on both projects, and should allow extra time for trips through these areas. When possible, use of alternate routes is suggested.
